A Sure Foundation
Every citadel begins beneath the ground, in stone that no one will ever see. The builder who hurries past this work builds upon sand; the one who lays a tried stone builds for a thousand years. These pages set out the letterforms, rhythm, and colour upon which everything else here will rest.
The typeface is Crimson Text, an old-style serif drawn for long reading. It is set on a perfect-fifth scale, so that each size stands at a clear, musical interval from the next. You can read more about the principle of a tried foundation in Isaiah 28.
Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isaiah 28:16, KJV
The Tried Stone
A cornerstone is chosen before it is trusted. It is struck, weighed, and set against the square. Only the stone that holds true under testing is laid where two walls must meet — for everything that follows takes its line from that single point.
Marks of a Living Stone
Scripture returns again and again to building imagery. A few of the marks it names:
- Chosen and precious, though rejected by the builders
- Set as the head of the corner, giving every wall its line
- Bearing weight without shifting, so that those who lean upon it shall not make haste
- Joined to other living stones, rising into a single house
Building in Order
Good work follows a sequence; nothing is laid out of turn. The order a builder keeps:
- Count the cost before the first stone is cut
- Dig down to rock, never resting the wall on soil
- Set the cornerstone true to the square and the plumb line
- Course by course, let each stone answer to the first
- Cap the work, then test the whole against the storm
The Whole Scale
Six heading levels span the perfect fifth, from the display weight of the title down to the quiet label. Each is a deliberate step.
Heading Level Three
Heading Level Four
Heading Level Five
Heading Level Six
Body text holds the centre of the system at sixteen pixels, with room to breathe between the lines. When you are ready, return to the home of Citadel Builders to see these styles at work.
